Phonics is a method of teaching children to read English. It involves teaching the association of particular sounds with the sets of alphabetical letters which can be used to produce those sounds in written words. In this way, children can learn to decode most words by breaking words up into their phonemic parts in order to work out how that word would be said.
There have been a couple of different schools of thought regarding how to best teach children to read.
Some educators have avoided phonics and advocated a memory-based approach in which children see words and memorize the entire word. This approach can work well for a while in that the children can be trained to recognize quite a lot of words and speak them out. But it has been discovered that in many cases this approach hits a limit. It would seem that many times when the child so taught reaches the age of 9 or so, his brain runs out of “space” to keep memorizing new words in this way. If the child has not learned to decode words by breaking them down into their constituent syllables, they may have trouble progressing further with their reading skills.
Current educational theory advocates that children be taught to read through phonics. There are a growing number of software packages that can be used by parents and schools to impart literacy skills to their children.
Ed Alive offers some excellent software packages on CD to enable children to learn to read effectively. The big plus with the Ed Alive products is the way game play is integrated as a reward for children who successfully answer questions. This keeps children highly motivated to continue their learning journey.
